How to choose a healthier breakfast cereal

There are countless breakfast cereals on the market – many high in sugar and low in the nutrients that support energy and long-term health.

But cereal doesn’t have to be off the menu. When you choose one that is low in sugar and high in fibre, and pair it with fruit, Greek yoghurt and a sprinkle of nuts or seeds, it can become a quick, balanced breakfast that supports satiety, gut health and muscle health.

What to look for

With so many options available, knowing what to look for can make the decision much easier.

Mostly whole grains
Whole grains are linked to better cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Less than 10 g sugar per 100 g
Lower sugar choices help support more stable energy levels across the morning.

At least 7 g fibre per 100 g
Fibre supports digestive health, cholesterol levels and fullness.

More fibre than sugar
As a simple guide, look for cereals where fibre is higher than sugar. This usually reflects a less processed and more satisfying option.

Sodium ideally under 400 mg per 100 g
Choosing lower sodium options supports overall cardiovascular health.

Make it a balanced meal

Cereal on its own is often low in protein and may not keep you full for long. But with a few simple additions, it can become a much more balanced meal.

Adding Greek yoghurt and milk increases protein to support muscle health, while nuts and seeds boost both protein and fibre. Fruit adds additional fibre – particularly raspberries, blackberries, pear, apple and kiwi – and a spoonful of psyllium husk can further increase fibre intake.

Make sure you drink water with or after your breakfast, as fibre absorbs fluid and helps support comfortable digestion.

These small changes can make a noticeable difference to how you feel through the morning.
